Learning DESIGN

“We believe that learning to be, learning to do, and learning to learn are more important than learning to know.”

— Acton Academy

Learn 2 Be

Self-driven learning unlocks the courage, character, and confidence to become who they were born to be—by turning difficult decisions into virtuous habits through the Hero’s Journey, relational covenants, and real-world consequences.

  • Students lead their own journey — setting goals, tracking progress, and offering feedback that shapes the studio culture. Weekly surveys invite learners and parents to share reflections, ensuring every voice is heard and needs are addressed. This active role builds trust, responsibility, and the confidence to become who they were born to be.

  • Daily launches, Socratic discussions, and real-life decision-making are led by Guides who challenge, equip, and inspire learners. Through encouragement, dialogue, and accountability, students turn clear thinking into purposeful action — and action into virtuous habits.

  • Covenants, natural consequences, and peer accountability transform everyday moments into opportunities to grow in wisdom, integrity, and self-control. Students experience the impact of their choices in a safe, supportive environment.

  • Milestones like Servant Leader Badges recognize acts of courage, resilience, and initiative — marking meaningful progress on each learner’s Hero’s Journey. Our environment blends joy and rigor, helping students embrace hard work with energy and purpose.

Learn 2 DO

Real-world challenges and life skills help students explore their passions and discover their calling — with Hands-on Quests in Science, Entrepreneurship, and the Arts preparing them for real-world impact and Apprenticeships.

  • Learners tackle immersive projects that reflect the real world — from diagnosing patients in Medical Biology to designing schools in Architecture Quest. Each challenge builds practical skills, courage, and critical thinking.

  • Students build essential life skills — all grounded in biblical values and practiced in community. Every session includes workshops focused on the 12 Pillars of Life — from personal relationships to personal finance — equipping students with tools to thrive both now and in adulthood.

  • Each learner explores their God-given gifts through creative, entrepreneurial, and service-based projects — discovering what brings them joy and how it can serve others. Through Scholar’s Choice, students who complete their core work for the day or week are given time to dive deeper into passion projects or launch something entirely their own.

  • Learners step into real responsibilities — leading exhibitions, mentoring younger peers, and participating in studio decisions. They grow into servant leaders who influence with humility and purpose.

Learn 2 Learn

Students develop the heroic habits of lifelong learners — often advancing two grade levels a year through Socratic Discussions and self-paced, mastery-based learning, equipping them to think independently, understand deeply, and thrive.

  • Students use adaptive technology and mastery-based tools to work through core subjects like math, reading, and writing — typically in just 2.5 to 3 hours a day. This frees up time for creativity, collaboration, and exploration — or allows them to move ahead and finish courses well before the expected pace.

  • Time-tested strategies like Pomodoro sessions and SMART goal tracking help learners stay focused, manage their time, and reflect on progress with intention.

  • Learners build resilience by seeing failure as feedback and challenges as opportunities. They develop the habits of independent, lifelong learners through a commitment to mastery over speed, perseverance in moments of struggle, and curiosity that drives deep exploration and meaningful questions.

  • We believe true wisdom begins with God. At Providence, students are reminded that learning is not just for achievement, but for growth in character, preparation for calling, and service to others.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” – Proverbs 9:10

“If Learn 2 Do, Learn 2 Be, and Learn 2 Learn challenges are accepted, young heroes will absorb amazing amounts of Learn 2 Know information — but in context, and in a way they can use and won’t soon forget.”

Learner-driven communities run by heroes-in-the-making

The Hero’s Journey is at the core of every Acton learner-driven community. Young heroes learn how to learn, do, and be—navigating real-life challenges with courage, character, and purpose. They manage themselves, govern their studios, and pursue excellence together through real-world projects and 21st-century skills.

Measuring mastery

Young heroes celebrate the mastery of tools, skills, and character by earning badges and taking part in public exhibitions.

Learners use badges to track academic progress in Core Skills like reading, writing, math and spelling and character development in Servant Leader Badges.

Young heroes deliver public exhibitions of their work at the end of each four to six week sprint.

Self-management and self-governance skills are measured by peer reviews at the end of each session.
